2022.01.24 01:39 Susceptive [WP] The galaxy is a dark and lonely place. "First Strike Diplomacy" reigns out of fear. Few species survive even 300 years after developing interstellar travel. When humans entered the galaxy, we were the first species confident enough in war to ask someone "Are you sure you want to do this?"

Two For Flinching No one sees a hit coming at the speed of light.
It's just a fact of physics: The light that should have been a warning arrives with the blast, then kind of fades backwards in a reverse echo. It's an interesting effect to watch if you happen to be outside the targeted planet at the time. Not so entertaining from the surface, though: Those beings are pretty much having a Bad Day when four thousand tons of hardened steel exit a gravity-neutral envelope directly into your atmosphere.
There's a flash, maybe enough time to blink and then a whole lotta fire.
Assuming they blink, of course. Some species don't.
Some species don't do a lot of things, actually. Like talking before shooting; there's a concept that didn't really catch on across the galaxy. There are over four hundred civilizations we know about right now and every single one of them subscribed to the "Dark Forest" mentality of space travel. That's the idea where you're all alone in a bad place, full of monsters, and you never know if the Others are going to wipe you out of existence if they find you. So, naturally, the safest option is to kill them first.
That didn't work too well on humans. Two reasons.
The first came down to sheer, dumb luck: We got to the stars in a radically weird way. Specifically we discovered gravity-neutral fields-- an artificial pocket of space that just sits on the dark matter of the universe. Think of how a leaf sits on a lake, or a spider 'skips' across the top of water without breaking through. That's our GNF. Every spacefaring civilization out there found a way to cheat the lightspeed barrier. But ours was-- incredibly-- the weirdest. Which makes it the most unexpected.
And you can't counter what you haven't seen.
The second reason wiping out humans doesn't work well is, well... look at us. Look at our history. We are assholes about holding out. Vicious little goblins with high technology and flesh in our teeth. Refrigerator mold with an attitude.
So we lost our first colony. That's true. It's a fact: Just shy of a hundred million people, gone in a flash when the Rhalthr came out of nowhere with their slick, oil-shimmering ships and dropped planet busters like party favors. Then ran like roaches into the dark, folding space in quick jumps as fast as they could. Probably congratulating themselves on the perfect, ninjalike hit.
Well, gosh. Too bad we didn't have technology that literally tracked gravity movements.
Oh, wait.
Yeah. We do. And satellites in orbit around our lost colony helpfully tagged every ship on the way out. We had pissed off GNF gunships on cross-galaxy intercepts in less than sixty days, some of them with the welds still hot from how fast our retooled factories slammed components together. We'd been using those factories for colony ships; now they were world enders.
We fell on the Rhalthr like bloody vengeance. You can't see a GNF coming, after all-- their first warning was when every fixed installation exploded at the same time across the system. It turned out the little lizardpeople really trashed their homeworld bootstrapping into space tech; most of their species lived on artificial stations and relied on enormous hatcheries for each generation.
It was a little light genocide, honestly. Also completely accidental-- Humans are terrestrial thinkers, Rhalthr aren't. They left our satellites alone and blasted the planet, we left the planet alone and kind of nearly ended their species on the satellites. Our bad.
Here's the other difference: We stopped.
And we talked.
Oh, anything that tried to launch under power ate an outside-of-lightspeed torpedo surprise. We were through taking chances on that. But when they stopped trying to flee we started doing the other thing humans are good at: Armistice. Our warships bombarded their surviving population with broad spectrum communications. Radio, EM, whatever we thought would work. Eventually we found them way up on the dial, sending some crazy base-12 digital transmissions.
We worked it out, rigged a conversion from our base-10 counting system and our eggheads started feeling out the basics of languages with the, uh... egg heads. It took months, long weeks spent carefully watching with fingers on triggers. But eventually the talks synched up on enough basic ideas to get across a rough conversation.
And the first thing the Rhalthr wanted to know was: Why?
We misunderstood. Because you started it. Obviously-- who takes a swing and then gets shocked when they're counterpunched?
No, they sent back. Why did you stop?
Oh. That was different. Not "why did you fight us" but "why didn't you kill us all?" And, oddly, even with a hundred million dead Humans and a colony destroyed we didn't have a quick answer. We're violent, as a species. But we're not... that. Psychologists and diplomats held a brief huddle, trying to find a way to encapsulate a history of brutal warfare with our odd sense of empathy.
Eventually we came up with a good answer.
Because, we sent over with a mental shrug. You got lucky, punk.

Historian's Note: The Human-Rhalthr Alliance became the template for galactic relations going forward. Confronted with proof that at least two differing species were cooperating other, isolated civilizations hesitated to escalate in case they were outnumbered. Some few still tried, of course, but GNF detection was utterly unheard of and difficult to counter. In the end the Alliance was formed with sixty participating species and would go unchallenged until the Sino-Logic Incursion of 3146.

2022.01.24 01:39 throwaway3849293 my (19f) relationship with my sister (29f) is toxic, unhealthy and emotionally damaging. i dont know what to do. (TW: threats of self harm and suicide)

  1. mom and dad were mismatched but did their best to raise us
  2. dad put sister on a massive pedestal and never said no to her
  3. dad made her feel as though the whole world would bow at her feet
  4. dad died when she was 17 and I was 6
  5. we migrated permanently shortly after and our family dynamics are strange to say the least
now I know everyone has trauma. everyone has reasons for why they do the things they do, but I believe that there is a fine line between capitalising on trauma to excuse your behaviour and genuinely being so affected by it that you are blind to what you do. she capitalises on her trauma and uses it as justification for being cruel.
she is emotionally manipulative to me and throughout my childhood, I have been the sole witness to the emotional, financial and verbal abuse that has happened at home mostly from her toward our mother. she has made very unkindly comments about my body when I was in my preteen years and those comments have stuck with me. she attempts to control the way we act, what we wear and how we talk because "what will people say?". she has threatened self harm and suicide because "no one loves her" or because we dont show her love the way she'd like us to (which is agreeing to everything she says and saying that she is always right).
she sees everything in life as a competition. everything must be one-upped. everything must be challenged and warped to accommodate her.
  1. you think you're stressed? you're only in university, you dont know how stressed I am with work
  2. you slept 4 hours? ha! I slept 2. I am much more tired than you, so please dont annoy me and run my errands, my body hurts
  3. you're really going to go to the gym and leave me alone at home? (I went for 30 minutes to relieve some stress)
  4. what do you mean its difficult to focus on school during covid? you are literally home all day, stop making excuses. you're stressed out for no reason, you have all the time in the world to study. bad grades won't be tolerated.
  5. dude, what is 68% in calculus? you know you have to do better right? (mid term exam of my first trimester in uni. I had never taken calculus before because I dropped math in high school. I was proud of that 68% because I fucking worked)
  6. hmmmm, are you sure you dont want a corset with that dress? (went out for dinner and wore a dress I'd never worn in public before. initially felt very happy because I utilised free time from covid at home to focus on my physical health and mental health by working out)
  7. dude, dont be annoying. we're sisters, just change/workout/get dressed in front of me, I dont care. why do you always have to be so difficult? (I am body conscious and I like to exercise and change alone)
  8. remember when you used to punch the wall? yeah, why did you do that anyway? (in my preteen years, I used to punch the wall because I was perpetually angry. I do not do that anymore because hurting myself in any way over her shit is not worth it. she brings it up sometimes for answers, and I dont know what to say)
  9. it's my money, dad left it behind for me. (its always family family family until it comes to money. dad didn't write a will, so it was divided in 3 equal parts. she's used up a 90% of her share, but continues to refer to the rest of the money as hers, because she was his princess)
these are just some of the many things she says to me. to our mother, she says worse.
I know I have work to do on my own character, we all do. but she thinks she doesn't need improvement. she is perfect, she knows all and she is always right. I have worked hard over our 2-3 years living apart to focus on becoming mentally strong and not pay attention to the things she says, but we're now in the same city again. i dont know what to do. our mother is a shell of a person and everyday there is just more stress than the last. I love our mother, but i dont know how to help. i dont know what to do. she thinks she's the sun in our lives. she is not. I am not willing to bend over backward to compromise and adjust for this family if she doesn't realise that if we do not even try to be in this together, it will never work. all three of us need to work on ourselves if we are to make this family work, so if she thinks she does not need to work on herself, we will never work as a family. at this point, I am convinced that we are better off maintaining relationships with each other separately. we are better off estranged maybe.
i dont know what to do. I am the most adult person in my family and I have been for a long time. it's tiring. I would like to be a teenager, to be a child. it's my birthday next week and I have no energy to even be happy about it. i dont know why I am even posting here. most of the advice I'll get will be advice I already know. perhaps I just need to get this off my chest to a bunch of strangers that are kind and loving and warm.

2022.01.24 01:39 Professional_Lead253 My fiancé abandoned me

So my fiancé who I have been in a relationship with for 5 years has abandoned me unexpectedly. He went on what was supposed to be a vacation to Germany (where he is originally from) and decided not to come back. He is planning to live there now. His family called to fill me in that he is having a mental breakdown. Apparently he has been medicated for schizoaffective disorder for the whole time I’ve known him. Now he is off his meds and is totally unrecognizable. He has no sympathy or compassion anymore and has a meltdown over simple conversations. He has ended the relationship and has decided to kick me out of the house so that he can rent it out and use the money to pay for his place in Germany. I feel like the whole relationship was a lie. He called to tell me how hard his life has been and that the last time he had a mental breakdown he went to jail and lost his ex girlfriend in Germany 10 years ago. He has tried to look for her since moving back but she is now married with kids. He calls and says things thinking I should feel bad for him like “losing you was the hard part, now the rest of my transition will be easy”. I tried explaining to him that he is choosing to lose me. Then he gets all cold because he only likes to feel bad for himself when he’s in this state. Before this all happened he was a very smart and kind man. He was always good to me and always promised to stay by my side. He’s not leaving me because the relationship is bad he says he’s leaving the country all together as a whole. I can’t help but feeling as though he never loved me at all. He says he was numb the whole time he was medicated and that now (during a mental breakdown) he is able to feel emotions normally, despite his paranoia and hallucinations. He’s been gone for months now but I just can’t seem to make sense of things. I’m not good at dealing with unexpected changes and don’t know how to cope with this. What can I do to make this less painful?

2022.01.24 01:39 WilhelminaLovesCats Thank you to the Warrior Cats series for shaping so much of who I am.

Today I realized it's been just about three years since the last time I read the Warrior Cats series. This series had such a huge influence on me and my life that I wanted to take a few moments to reflect on it.
I was a loner introvert 4rd grader who didn't understand people and emotions whatsoever when I started reading Warrior Cats. I was processing a lot at the time and the series brought me so much comfort and escape. Since the characters were cats, I didn't feel like it was stupid to care about their emotions. These books were how I started to learn about feelings in a way that didn't feel scary.
This series also brought me my best friend. I hated her in 3rd grade because I didn't think she was being careful enough not to hurt the bugs she caught. In 4th grade, we started talking about cats and the books. We played games and wrote stories based on Warrior Cats. I trust her with my life and she motivates me to be the best version of myself possible.
All of my early hobbies came from Warrior Cats in some ways. I wrote wc fanfics, drew the cats, and learned about herbalism because the medicine cats were my favorite. I'm don't do any of these much anymore, but I learned so much about myself throughout from them.
I know this sounds dramatic to say, but I don't think I would still be alive without this series. I really clung to the books as a reason to come to school and try to function at times. I still keep a few of the books on my shelf and I have them as a part of my safety plan in case my mental health gets worse again.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the books, made any of the games on roblox or the official website, or listened to me talk about the cats for hours. Thank you to my teacher who recommended the books to me and took a little kid's writing seriously enough to foster their dreams and teach them that they could do so much more than they thought.
Warrior Cats is part of a bygone era of my life, but it still brings back so many memories. I don't think I can say it enough times, but thank you for this series.

2022.01.24 01:39 sunbrr Ramifications for Disputing a Charge from an Order that was Returned 3 Weeks Ago

Been dealing with a frustrating return through mail from an online order.
I purchased the newest Airpod Pros around Thanksgiving while they were on sale. Tried them out and didn't like them. Was gone for the holidays and wasn't able to initiate a return until after the new year. Got the UPS label and the return was received at the returns center in early January.
After calling Costco numerous times, I still haven't received a refund. It has apparently been escalated up the food chain with the returns department twice, but each call I make to customer support tells me to wait another few business days.
My patience has run out. Previous posts have discussed disputing the original charge with the credit card, which am I considering. Before I do so, I wanted to ask if there are potential ramifications for disputing. Would Costco flag the account making future returns more challenging, would they go nuclear and cancel the membership?
tl;dr - does Costco retaliate against members for disputing a charge from an online order that was returned several weeks in the past.
